I experiment with passive voice, tenses, male/female POV, discover different words once a month in my ‘Word Fiend’ word challenges, and play with genre and pacing. Seems counter-intuitive that writing every day for as long as I have would teach me to write, but it really has. The more I write, the more ideas I have – which is great, because I have over 250 to go.ģ. Requiring a story out of myself each day has stretched my creativity beyond what it was previously, and more often than not I already have a story lingering on the tip of my fingers as I open a new draft. Cooking dinner, coming home from work, finishing assignments – all of these moments are ones I’ve written about, intertwined with the science fiction, suspense, fantasy and the occasional introspective like today. But, as I’ve discovered, even the most mundane moments make for an evocative piece of writing. So, 365 days, 365 stories – that’s 365 ideas to come up with, day after day. It does come with a whole host of benefits, of which the main one brings me to my next point.Ģ. But, I set myself a goal, and so far I’m sticking to it. Many blogs or articles on writing recommend writing every day, and perhaps if you’re a professional writer that might be fine, but it does take a hell of a commitment, as I’m quickly discovering. Writing every day is hard, harder than you imagine it to be, especially as a naive blogger who decides that 365 pieces of writing in 365 days is something they want to do. So, what have I learned over these last three months? What can readers take away from my experience?ġ. I blogged via phone, and it sucked, but I did it anyway. I write regardless of location or arising problems – like the past few days, since my internet has been unplugged while we paint. Somewhere in these past few months however, a habit has formed. Some of them tripped of the edges of my keyboard-tapping fingers with no effort at all – others I backspaced and rewrote and agonised over for hours. Crazy how time flies, isn’t it?ġ00 posts, 100 stories. I passed the 100 post mark the other day, meaning that I’ve been at this daily writing thing for over three months.
